Joining Our Shepherd will connect you to caring people who share your faith in Jesus and are passionate about Openly Sharing the Loving Christ. The process begins by contacting Pastor Woodfin at firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 248-646-6100, ext. 106. He will set up a time with you to meet you, get to know you, and talk about Our Shepherd's unique ministry.
New Member Events take place on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am in the church library.
Transferring members are expected to speak with the pastor, attend Orientation, ToolKit, and New Member Welcome.
Individuals who are joining the Lutheran church for the first time are expected to speak with the pastor, attend Orientation, Tool Kit, the New Member Welcome, and Lutheranism 101.
Please note the ToolKit and New Member Welcome take place on the same day.
NEW MEMBER EVENTS
All new members are asked to attend Orientation, which presents the "big picture" of what Our Shepherd is all about. Our practices regarding Baptism and Communion are explained and the expectations for membership are presented. Orientation helps newcomers make the decision as to whether Our Shepherd is a "good fit" for them.
Lutheranism 101 Class:
New members who are not transferring from a sister church in our denomination are asked to attend the "Lutheranism 101" class. Lutheranism 101 provides the basics needed for newcomers to become fully part of the Christian church and to be comfortable with Lutheranism's unique, humble and loving approach to understanding God's Word.
All new members will be asked to attend ToolKit, which provides the "nuts and bolts" needed for all new members to participate fully at Our Shepherd: Receiving information about mailboxes, offering envelopes & member pictures; participating in a survey we use to meet our members' spiritual needs, etc. The ToolKit class is held the same day that new members officially join the church.
After completing the new member process, individuals and families are recognized as a group in a simple ceremony during a church worship service. The ceremony provides the opportunity for current members to welcome new members and for new members to express their commitment to worship at Our Shepherd and support her work.
HOW NEW MEMBERS ARE RECEIVED INTO MEMBERSHIP
Membership in a church establishes a deep commitment with the Lord, the church and each member of the church. Pastor Woodfin will help individuals and families determine the best path for membership. You will be received through one of the following methods:
Transfer of Membership
Current members of partner churches of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod may join by transferring their membership to Our Shepherd. Partner churches are located throughout North America and the world. Pastor Woodfin will help you determine if you are a member of a partner church.
Reaffirmation of Faith
Individuals who have been confirmed by a partner church of the LCMS, but presently do not hold membership in a church may re-establish their membership at Our Shepherd through Reaffirmation of Faith. Pastor Woodfin will help you determine if Reaffirmation of Faith would be best for you.
Individuals who have not been confirmed by a partner church of the LCMS may join through Confirmation. Confirmation provides the opportunity for newcomers to Christianity to profess their faith in Jesus Christ. It also provides the opportunity for newcomers who are already Christian to express their commitment to worship as members of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU JOIN?
New members are invited to participate in programs and events that connect members to each other and that encourage participation and involvement in worship, Bible study, service and leadership. New members will be assigned an elder and will receive a special invitation to a luncheon held in honor of our new members who have joined during the year.
