Good Shepherd Sunday: Flee From the Hired Hands

Pastor Steve Woodfin | April 20, 2024

"Good Shepherd Sunday: Flee from the Hired Hands" John 10:10b-18 Preacher: Rev. Steve Woodfin The fourth Sunday of Easter is Good Shepherd Sunday, where we focus on Jesus’ “Good Shepherd Discourse” found in John chapter 10. This weekend, we’ll look at what Jesus says about the “hired hand” who flees at the first sign of danger, because he “cares nothing for the sheep.” In this world, there are many “hired hands” who say they have our best interests in mind. But do they? Or are they leading us along for their own purpose, their own gain, ready to flee when we no longer serve their interests? In contrast to the hired hand, we see Jesus. He is the Good Shepherd. He knows us, and by His grace, we know Him as our Lord, our Savior, our King. As we flee from the hired hands of this world and toward our Good Shepherd, we also move away from fear and anxiety, and toward the abundant life of everlasting peace which only Jesus offers. He has proven His eternal love for us, as He said: "I lay down my life for the sheep."
